Created in 1940, A Shrine in the Deep Woods is a color woodblock design. The shrine is almost absorbed by mature forest, expressing the longstanding relationship between Shinto sacred sites and natural precincts. Yoshida makes the approach through darkness and trees part of the religious experience.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on a wooded setting built from repeated trunks, layered foliage, and filtered light. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.

As a later design, it shows Yoshida sustaining his interest in travel, weather, and spatial clarity while working with increasingly economical arrangements.
