Created in 1926, Climbing a Snow Valley at Harinoki is a color woodblock design for the Twelve Scenes in the Japan Alps. Harinoki Pass was historically crossed on a demanding route through the northern Japanese Alps. The climbers ascending a lingering snow valley make bodily effort, danger, and scale central to the landscape.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on climbers negotiating a steep snow-filled mountain valley. Weather softens contours and compresses distance, making atmosphere an active part of the subject. Subtle tonal transitions—effects for which Yoshida’s printing is especially admired—allow light and weather to reshape the same solid forms.

In Twelve Scenes in the Japan Alps, Yoshida drew on his experience as a mountaineer as well as a landscape artist, presenting high terrain as observed space rather than generalized scenery.
