Created in 1926, Kamoie Cherry Trees is a color woodblock design. The design is dominated by the spreading structure and dense blossom of mature cherry trees. Rather than treating blossom as a decorative fringe, Yoshida makes the age and physical presence of the trees the central subject.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on blossoming trees set in relation to a specific architectural or natural setting. Seasonal color is balanced against stable architectural and landscape forms, giving the scene both immediacy and order. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.

Made during the formative years of Yoshida’s independent print production, the design shows him applying the resources of color woodblock printing to subjects grounded in direct observation.
