Created in 1933, Maruyama Park is a color woodblock design for the Kansai District series. Maruyama Park beside Yasaka Shrine is Kyoto’s oldest public park and a celebrated cherry-blossom viewing site. Yoshida records a modern civic landscape built around seasonal custom and proximity to major religious precincts.
In the design, Yoshida focuses on a cultivated landscape in which paths, water, architecture, and planting are held in deliberate balance. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.
The Kansai District series turns to western Japan’s historic cities and cultural landscapes, joining recognizable sites to carefully observed weather, light, and human activity.
