Created in 1935, Miho is a color woodblock design. Miho no Matsubara is a pine-covered shore on Suruga Bay, long celebrated for views of Mount Fuji and associated with the Noh drama Hagoromo. Yoshida places his modern landscape within one of Japan’s most enduring poetic and pictorial sites.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on a coastal view organized around the meeting of water, shore, and distant land. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.

The design belongs to Yoshida’s mature period, when he expanded the subjects available to modern Japanese woodblock printing while retaining the discipline of observed light and place.
