Created in 1926, Sunrise is a color woodblock design for the Ten Views of Fuji. Mount Fuji appears at sunrise, when the first light separates its snow-covered cone from the surrounding atmosphere. As the opening design in Ten Views of Fuji, it announces Yoshida’s modern reworking of a subject made canonical by Hokusai and Hiroshige.
In the design, Yoshida focuses on a carefully observed place structured through foreground detail, measured recession, and atmospheric distance. Early light clarifies the major forms while color gradations suggest the atmosphere of a day just beginning. Subtle tonal transitions—effects for which Yoshida’s printing is especially admired—allow light and weather to reshape the same solid forms.
Ten Views of Fuji revisits a canonical Japanese subject through modern viewpoints and changing conditions, placing Yoshida in dialogue with the long history of landscape prints devoted to the mountain.
