Created in 1940, Suzhou is a color woodblock design. Suzhou is celebrated for canals, stone bridges, classical gardens, and its historic role as a wealthy Jiangnan city. Yoshida’s view engages a Chinese urban landscape long idealized in East Asian art and literature.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on an urban view in which streets, buildings, and figures establish a strong sense of place. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.

As a later design, it shows Yoshida sustaining his interest in travel, weather, and spatial clarity while working with increasingly economical arrangements.
