Created in 1925, The Jungfrau is a color woodblock design for the Europe Series. The Jungfrau is one of the celebrated high peaks of Switzerland’s Bernese Alps. Yoshida presents it as a study in snow, exposed rock, and alpine distance, joining direct observation to the long European tradition of sublime mountain imagery.
In the design, Yoshida focuses on a mountain landscape shaped by elevation, distance, and changing weather. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.
The Europe Series joins Japanese color woodblock technique to subjects Yoshida knew through international travel, reflecting the cross-cultural outlook central to his modern printmaking.
