Created in 1929, The Old Inner Citadel is a color woodblock design for the Twelve Scenes of Tokyo. The subject is the surviving core of Edo Castle, seat of the Tokugawa shogunate and later part of the Imperial Palace grounds. Yoshida treats its massive stone walls and moat as historical structures embedded within modern Tokyo.

In the design, Yoshida focuses on a carefully observed place structured through foreground detail, measured recession, and atmospheric distance. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.

Twelve Scenes of Tokyo records the modern capital through rivers, gardens, bridges, streets, and historic sites, preserving atmosphere rather than treating the city as a catalogue of landmarks.
