Created in 1927, Tomonoura is a color woodblock design for the Inland Sea Series. Tomonoura is a historic port on the Seto Inland Sea whose sheltered harbor prospered as ships waited for favorable tides. Yoshida’s view records the close relationship among the harbor, clustered settlement, and surrounding hills.
In the design, Yoshida focuses on a coastal view organized around the meeting of water, shore, and distant land. Layered color and selective detail guide the eye between near forms and atmospheric distance. Crisp carved contours are balanced with graduated color, combining descriptive precision with the atmospheric effects associated with Yoshida’s approach to modern color woodblock printing.
The Inland Sea Series examines changing light, weather, and water around Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, often using boats as measured accents within broad atmospheric spaces.
